Da Ignorância, sob o signo,
Não sabemos a que veio tudo isto.
Alguns de nós fechados com Mefisto,
Nosso papel é triste e pouco digno.

Não saber sequer nosso destino...
O ser em penumbra e vacilante,
Lá fora o escaldante sol a pino
Somos cegos em torno do elefante.

Entre o céu e a terra tudo é vão,
Disse um bardo irônico e sagaz
Que sabia todavia um pouco mais.

Lembre: o anjo enxotou-nos do Jardim
Pela nossa incoercível inclinação
Para os meios, desconhecendo o fim...

Notas
Alguns de nós fechados com Mefisto -
alusão ao pacto de Fausto com o Diabo encarnado no personagem Mefistófeles (ou Mefisto) , no célebre drama "Fausto", de Goethe.
*Somos cegos em torno do elefante -
Alusão à famosa parábola indiana dos sete cegos e o elefante.
*Entre o céu e a terra tudo é vão- alusão à famosa frase do Hamlet (de Shakespeare): "Há mais coisas entre o céu e a terra do que sonha a nossa vã filosofia".

an allusion to Faust's pact with the Devil embodied in the character Mephistopheles (or Mephisto), in Goethe's famous drama "Faust".

Allusion to the famous Iindian parable of the seven blind and the elephant.
* Between heaven and earth everything is in vain - allusion to Hamlet's famous phrase (by Shakespeare): "There is more between heaven and earth than our vain philosophy dreams about".
